Red Fort - Agra

It is the most important fort in India. The large Mugals, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was ruled from here. It was only during the reign of Akbar's grandson, Shah Jahan, the site had in its current state. The legend is that Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal for his beautiful wife Mumtaz Mahal. Unlike his grandfather, Shah Jahan tended to have buildings of white marble, often inlaid with gold or semi-precious gems.At end of his life Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in the fort. He had a view of the building erected for his deceased wife. Shah Jahan is said to have died in the Musamman Burj, a tower with a beautiful marble balcony.
It is known as Red Fort because it is built of a kind of red sandstone. Within this Fort there lies some of the most exquisite architecture of the Mughal Period; like the Pearl Mosque, Moti Masjid, Diwan-i-Khas, Diwan-i-Am and Jahangiri Mahal.
